WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn made the following statement Thursday regarding Senate passage of the Port Security bill, H.R. 4954, by a vote of 98-0: "I applaud Senate passage of this important legislation to greatly improve our port security. I’m encouraged that the bill ensures that risk-assessment plays a greater part in determining port security funding. This helps Texas ports in particular, and is a step in the right direction. "The bill also makes our ports safer by expanding our ability to screen inbound shipping containers and identify suspicious cargo before it reaches our ports. "Our ports, especially those in Texas, are a key economic engine for the nation and this bill maintains a balance between security and the flow of legitimate goods and commerce. "I’m confident that we are safer than we were on 9/11, but we could be safer. And this bill takes important steps to address any potential vulnerability our ports may face.”
