U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, made the following statement Wednesday regarding reports of a new taped message from Saddam Hussein:"Though we don’t yet know if the voice on the tape is that of Saddam Hussein, one thing is clear: If he’s alive, he’s making these tapes from a cave somewhere, not from a palace in Baghdad with his finger on a trigger and his boot on the neck of the Iraqi people. No amount of tapes there, or critics here, will change that."In just four months, coalition forces have restored schools and hospitals, and completed more than 6,000 reconstruction projects across Iraq. A new government is forming, and will soon begin drafting a constitution. Good, steady progress is being made on behalf of the Iraqi people. But we must, and we will, finish the job.”Cornyn joined eight Senate colleagues in early July for an Armed Services Committee trip to Iraq and the surrounding region. The delegation met with U.S. and Iraqi officials involved in the reconstruction effort. While there, Cornyn visited with Texas military personnel and received briefings from coalition forces and humanitarian organizations.
