WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a former Texas Supreme Court justice, made the following statement Wednesday regarding false ads attacking Judge Roberts, the President’s nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court:“Sadly, the attack machine is just starting to warm up, and the latest attack on Judge Roberts was predictable. In fact, the whole thing reminds me of that movie Groundhog Day, where every new nomination begins like the last. “For example, when President Nixon nominated Lewis Powell in 1971, a special interest group declared that ‘justice for women will be ignored!’ And when President Ford nominated John Paul Stevens in 1975, we heard that a vote for Stevens was a vote to limit the rights of women ‘to choose whether to have a child.’ And in 1990 President Bush nominated David Souter to the Court, and true to form, a group declared that by considering Souter, the Senate was ‘considering ending freedom for women in this country.’ And at a rally of the National Organization for Women, a flyer was distributed stating: ‘Stop Souter or women will die.’“Of course, just as the charges against earlier nominees were ridiculous slanders, so too are these charges against Judge Roberts. These groups are merely crying wolf again. This time Judge Roberts is their target, but everyone should remember this history of slander when such charges are leveled against this nominee.“So these charges are not new, and the attacks are little more than recycled slander. I hope my colleagues can resist this low-road approach to what should be a fair, thorough and dignified confirmation process.”
