WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, hosted Senior Airman Nathan H. Summers Wednesday in his Washington office to congratulate him for being honored as one of the Air Force’s Outstanding Airmen of the Year."I was pleased to be able to congratulate Airman Summers in person for his courageous and dedicated service to our country,” Sen. Cornyn said. “I’m proud of this courageous airman and I appreciate what he and all our men and women in the armed services are doing to defend our freedom and security.” Sens. Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchison toured Dyess Air Force Base (AFB) in April to meet with commanding officers and salute the success of our troops. Senior Airman Nathan H. Summers, of Abilene, is assigned to the 317th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Dyess AFB, Texas. As a C-130H crew chief, Summers was awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal for his superior performance during Operation Enduring Freedom. He completed more than 1,000 maintenance actions and recovered and turned 640 combat sorties which totaled more than 1,641 flying hours. Summers was hand-picked by his squadron leadership to fly combat airlift missions to Afghanistan, Pakistan and during Operation Anaconda. Fluent in the German language, Summers was instrumental in the quick turn for a NATO aircraft by being able to translate for a German fighter pilot.
