Cornyn Reelected GOP Whip for New Congress

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) issued the following statement after being unanimously re-elected by his colleagues to serve as Republican Whip for the 115th Congress:

“I’m grateful for the privilege to again help lead my colleagues and build on the progress we’ve been able to make over the last two years in the Majority,” Sen. Cornyn said. “The hallmark Texas principles of limited government and individual liberty will continue to guide me as we work with the new Republican Administration to chart a new direction for the country.”

Notable Legislative Accomplishments of the 114th Congress:

  • The Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act, passed with a 99-0 vote, provides law enforcement with tools to go after those who perpetuate human trafficking, as well as resources to help victims heal;
  • The first bicameral, bipartisan budget passed since 2009, balancing the budget in 10 years without raising taxes and cutting $5.5 trillion in spending;
  • The FOIA Improvement Act, passed unanimously and signed into law by the President in June 2016, requires Federal agencies to operate more transparently under a “presumption of openness”;
  • The first multi-year highway bill passed in over a decade will provide states with long-term certainty for infrastructure planning;
  • The Every Student Succeeds Act, passed in June 2016, is the first significant education reform in eight years and puts decision-making back into the hands of school districts, teachers, and parents;
  • The Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act will combat the growing epidemic of heroin and prescription drug use in America.
