Cornyn Responds To Clinton's Fundraising Claims
U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee's subcommittee on the Constitution, made the following statement Thursday regarding fundraising efforts of the DSCC:"I find it amazing to hear my colleague from New York complain about efforts to end the filibusters against the President's nominees be characterized as a fundraising tool, that ‘this is about raking the money in.' Such comments are particularly amusing given the recent fundraising effort by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee."In a fund-raising electronic newsletter to potential donors, the chairman of the DSCC, Sen. Jon Corzine (D-N.J.), acknowledged – indeed, he boasted – that the current blockade of judicial nominees is 'unprecedented.' It is plainly dishonest for Senate Democrats to tell their donors one thing, and the American people another thing."The following paragraph from the solicitation says it all:'But the Administration has got a big problem: Senate Democrats. Senate Democrats have launched an unprecedented effort to protect the rights of all Americans by keeping our courts fair and impartial. By mounting filibusters against the Bush Administration's most radical nominees, Senate Democrats have led the effort to save our courts.'"Four unconstitutional filibusters are four too many, whether they raise funds for the DSCC or not." Sen. Cornyn chairs the subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights & Property Rights, and is the only former judge on the committee. He also serves on the Armed Services, Environment and Public Works, and Budget Committees. He served previously as Texas Attorney General, Texas Supreme Court Justice, and Bexar County District Judge.
