WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) today released the following statement after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a prohibition on settlement payments to third party special interest groups not directly harmed by the alleged conduct.  The announcement, along with the memorandum sent to all Department of Justice components and United States Attorney’s Offices, can be found here.

“Far too often under the previous Administration defendants were coerced into making payments to political groups with little to no involvement in the matter other than having curried favor with the Obama White House,” Sen. Cornyn said.  “It is the job of Congress to decide how money recovered by government lawyers is spent.  I applaud Attorney General Sessions for putting an end to this abusive practice.”

The last two Congresses Senator Cornyn cosponsored the Stop Settlements Slush Fund Act, introduced by Senator James Lankford (R-OK), which prohibited settlement agreements that require donations to third parties.
