The Honorable Joseph R. Biden Jr.
President
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Biden:

I write to express my full support of your request to Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Haines for a comprehensive threat assessment on domestic violent extremism. I share your belief that this is a necessary first step in addressing the rising danger of homegrown extremism, however, I remain concerned about the potential roles foreign adversaries play in amplifying and supporting these groups and entities. It is crucial we understand the full extent of the threat facing our nation to ensure the tragic events of January 6, 2021, never happen again. I am committed to working with you and DNI Haines to ensure the brave men and women in the intelligence community have the resources they need and respectfully request that a comprehensive threat assessment explores and analyzes the roles played, if any, by foreign malign actors.

As a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, I have seen firsthand the lengths foreign adversaries are willing to go to undermine our security and promote instability. They rightfully understand that we are strongest when we stand united, and they will spare no expense or effort in attempting to divide us. Our adversaries’ methods are constantly evolving, and it is important we understand their reach and impact. I know you and DNI Haines share my belief that America is safest when intelligence is fact-driven, and that this threat assessment will be the first of many steps needed to defend our democratic institutions from those who would like to see them destroyed.

Thank you for your leadership and attention to this important matter.

Sincerely,

/s/
