‘We’ve been in constant communication with all of my colleagues. Some of them have requested additional information, which we’ve gotten for them. I'm optimistic we will confirm the judge.’

‘I spent 13 years as a judge back in Texas, and I recognize the need to have somebody who does this for a living day after day carefully question somebody who has claimed to be a victim of sexual assault.’

‘This has been shameful. Shameful to Dr. Ford, shameful to Brett Kavanaugh. This has not been a search for the truth. This is about search and destroy.’

WASHINGTON – Today U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) appeared on Fox News’ Fox & Friends to discuss yesterday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing with Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Judge Brett Kavanaugh.  Excerpts from his appearance are below, and video can be found here

On if the Senate has the Votes to Confirm:

“I’m optimistic. We’ve been in constant communication with all of my colleagues. Some of them have requested additional information, which we’ve gotten for them. I'm optimistic we will confirm the judge.”

“We have been engaging in personal texts, conversations, face-to-face visits. It’s the norm for how things happen around here. So much of what is done is done person-to-person, and I respect their right to make their own announcement, which I sure they will do in due course.”

On the Format of the Hearing:

“I spent 13 years as a judge back in Texas, and I recognize the need to have somebody who does this for a living day after day carefully question somebody who has claimed to be a victim of sexual assault. I thought she did a good job getting the basic facts out. Obviously, later on, Senator Graham and I and others decided other arguments needed to be made, and we were the best ones to make those.”

On Democrats’ Tactics during Judge Kavanaugh’s Nomination Process:

“This has been shameful. Shameful to Dr. Ford, shameful to Brett Kavanaugh. This has not been a search for the truth. This is about search and destroy.”

“The way both Dr. Ford and Brett Kavanaugh were treated, I think, was indecent and cruel.”
