Sen. Cornyn Hosts Meeting With Texas Migrant Council Leaders In Washington
WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee’s Immigration, Refugees and Border Security subcommittee, today hosted a meeting with the CEO of the Texas Migrant Council (TMC), Mary Capello, along with members of TMC’s Board of Directors in his Washington office. “I was pleased to have the opportunity to meet with leaders from the Texas Migrant Council in Washington today. I reiterated my support for the hard work they do to provide opportunity and a quality education to the children of migrants throughout the state. From workforce training to early childhood development, the Texas Migrant Council has been making a positive difference in the lives of thousands of migrant farm workers and their families in Texas for more than 30 years,” Sen. Cornyn said. “We also discussed our shared commitment to reaching out to low-income children and their families throughout Texas to boost awareness of the vital health care services available through the State Children’s Health Insurance Program and enroll more eligible children.” Background: Last year, Sen. Cornyn attended the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Senator John Cornyn Texas Migrant Seasonal Head Start School in Mission, Texas. The school was renamed in Sen. Cornyn’s honor due to his continued support for the Texas Migrant Council (TMC) and its initiatives. In 2005, Sen. Cornyn successfully assisted TMC in securing $4.2 million in Head Start expansion funding that in turn allowed them to serve an additional 562 children. TMC receives most of its federal funding through the Migrant and Seasonal Head Start program. This program is tailored to meet the specific needs of migrant and seasonal farm worker families. Children and infants as young as six weeks are cared for by TMC schools, while their parents are working. In addition to educational services and child care, TMC also provides services in family literacy, consumer education, and prenatal care. Sen. Cornyn serves on the Finance, Judiciary and Budget Committees. He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee's Immigration, Border Security and Refugees subcommittee. He served previously as Texas Attorney General, Texas Supreme Court Justice, and Bexar County District Judge.
