WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, today issued the following statement regarding Senate passage of the Second Amendment Enforcement Act, which he cosponsored, that would ensure law-abiding residents of Washington, D.C. are able to exercise their Second Amendment rights: “Senate passage of the Second Amendment Enforcement Act brings D.C. residents one step closer to finally being able to exercise a fundamental Constitutional right—the right to keep and bear arms in their homes and businesses. Our founding fathers recognized that gun ownership is the legal right of every law-abiding American. I was proud to support today’s amendment that strengthens one of our core freedoms secured by America’s founders.” Background:

  • The amendment would ensure law-abiding D.C. residents are able to exercise their Second Amendment rights as upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in District of Columbia v. Heller.
  • The amendment would ensure that D.C. could not prohibit, constructively prohibit, or unduly burden a law-abiding citizen’s right to possess, acquire, or use a firearm in their home or business for a lawful purpose, including sporting and self-protection.

Sen. Cornyn serves on the Finance, Judiciary and Budget Committees. He serves as the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee’s Immigration, Refugees and Border Security subcommittee. He served previously as Texas Attorney General, Texas Supreme Court Justice, and Bexar County District Judge.
