WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Chris Coons (D-DE) released the following statements after the Taiwan Assurance Implementation Act, which would require the U.S. Department of State to review and update its policy guidance regarding Taiwan no less than every five years and deliver a report to Congress within 90 days in light of the rapidly changing geopolitical landscape and threats of an invasion by China, passed the U.S. House of Representatives:

“The threat China poses to the stability of the Indo-Pacific, including our friend and ally Taiwan, is ever-evolving, and our diplomatic guidance must be able to keep up,” said Sen. Cornyn. “This legislation would help reinstate a strong Taiwan strategy at the State Department at a time when we need it most.”

“When I traveled to Taiwan last month, I saw first-hand its importance for securing a free and open Indo-Pacific,” said Sen. Coons. “Congress has long supported strong United States-Taiwan relations. The Taiwan Assurance Act continues that tradition by supporting our shared values and reinforcing stability in the region, and I’m glad to see the House take up and pass this crucial bill.”
