Cornyn Supports Bill to Ban Chemical Abortion Drug Mifepristone
March 13, 2026
AUSTIN – U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) cosponsored Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO)’s Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act, which would ban the chemical abortion drug mifepristone and empower women harmed by the drug to sue its manufacturers:
“The data is clear that mifepristone, a mail-order drug that kills unborn children, also threatens the life of the mother and can cause severe adverse reactions ranging from sepsis to hemorrhages,” said Sen. Cornyn. “Grounded in both science and Scripture, directing the FDA to withdraw approval of harmful chemical abortions drugs is essential to protect the lives of our most vulnerable and ensure the strongest possible safety standards for women.”
Congresswoman Diana Harshbarger (TN-01) will introduce companion legislation in the House.
Background:
The Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act would:
- Withdraw the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of mifepristone for abortion;
- Make distributing and labeling mifepristone for pregnancy termination violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act;
- And create a private right of action for women harmed by chemical abortion to sue manufacturers for damages.
This legislation is endorsed by Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, Family Research Council, Alliance Defending Freedom, Concerned Women for America, Live Action, Students for Life of America, Ethics and Public Policy Center, and the American Association of Pro-Life OBGYNs.
