In Corpus Christi, Cornyn Announces $161 Million in Relief Funding for the Region So Far

CORPUS CHRISTI – U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) announced today at the CHRISTUS Spohn Shoreline Hospital that various entities in the Corpus Christi area so far have been allocated nearly $160,900,000 in federal coronavirus relief resources from Congress. While there he thanked local health care employees for their work during the coronavirus pandemic and was able to see firsthand how the CARES Act, a coronavirus relief bill he supported in March, is helping them combat the pandemic in the Coastal Bend.

Following a visit with health care workers, Sen. Cornyn held a socially-distanced joint press conference with Mayor Joe McComb of Corpus Christi, Judge Barbara Canales of Nueces County, and leadership from CHRISTUS Spohn, Texas A&M Univ.-Corpus Christi, and Corpus Christi ISD, who each spoke to how they have used CARES Act funds to benefit the Coastal Bend community.

Thus far, Sen. Cornyn has worked to secure nearly $161 million in funding for the Corpus Christi area, including:
  • Corpus Christi ISD: $10,120,213
    • Purchased more than 12,000 devices for remote learning
    • Procured PPE such as facemasks, face shields, gloves, and hand sanitizer
    • Continued pay for all employees without interruption
       
  • Texas A&M Univ. – Corpus Christi: $10,105,662
    • Provided Emergency Financial Aid to more than 3,000 students
    • Upgraded technology in classrooms for remote learning
    • Expanded technological access to address economic disparities
    • Refunded meal plans and housing for remote students
       
  • City of Corpus Christi: $22,770,982
    • $3.5 million for Small Business Disaster Relief Loan Program
    • $500,000 for Small Business Assistance Pandemic Grant Program
    • $500,000 for Nonprofit Recovery Fund
    • $489,386 for Mayor’s Disaster Relief Fund
