In Lubbock, Cornyn Announces $132 Million in Relief Funding for the Region So Far

August 18, 2020

LUBBOCK – U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) announced today at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) that various entities in the Lubbock region so far have been allocated $132,451,995 in federal coronavirus relief resources from Congress. While there he was joined by Texas Tech University (TTU) System Chancellor Dr. Tedd Mitchell, TTUHSC President Dr. Lori Rice-Spearman, and TTU President Dr. Lawrence Schovanec to see firsthand how the CARES Act, a coronavirus relief bill he supported in March, is helping them combat the coronavirus pandemic in Lubbock.

He first toured TTUHSC’s drive-thru clinic funded by the CARES Act and viewed a simulated demonstration of a telehealth visit between rural patients and Texas Tech physicians before learning about the different types of medical equipment the CARES Act helped TTUHSC purchase to help fight the pandemic.

After the tour, Sen. Cornyn held a socially-distanced joint press conference with the three Texas Tech principles, as well as Mayor Dan Pope of Lubbock and President & CEO Mark Funderburk of UMC Medical System, who each spoke to how they have used CARES Act funds to benefit the Lubbock community.

Thus far, Sen. Cornyn has worked to secure $132 million in funding for the Lubbock area, including:
